There’s nothing we love more than snapping a million family photos. But trying to organise them all can be tricky – especially for all the busy parents out there.
Before you know it, the camera roll on your phone will be in the thousands; with even more to come following the next birthday, milestone or memorable moment. Or even worse – all your memories will be scattered across a million devices, email conversations, social media platforms, hard drives and wherever else your digital pics seem to get about. So, what’s the best way to organise your family photos? We’ve rounded up everything you need to know.
Why it’s so important to look after your family photos
It’s easy to become overwhelmed just thinking about all your digital family photos you need to take stock of and organise, but by following these small steps along the way, your special moments will be organised in no time. It might be a time-consuming task – but it sure is worth it.
Quick ways for busy parents to organise family photos
Make friends with the delete button
We’re just going to go straight in with the hard truth – the first step to getting your family photos in order is by hitting that ‘delete’ button. Now we don’t mean everything, but you’re going to need to cull a few snaps including the blurry shots, duplicates or unnecessary screenshots. While we’re completely onboard with the idea that all moments are worth holding onto forever, it’s unlikely you need 50 of the exact same photo of the exact same moment. Keep 10, if you want. But delete the other 40.
Once you start the decluttering process, your future self will thank you for it. Even if your phone has unlimited storage, you’re still going to need to chip away at it to get your family photos organised.
Start with a few minutes a day to build a routine
We said this article was created for all the busy parents out there – and we meant it. All you need is a few minutes – or maybe even less – each day to start organising your family photos. Start by deleting the photos in your camera roll that don’t make your heart skip a beat. Then, favourite the ones you can’t live without, and slowly organise your favourite events, milestones or moments into smaller albums for easy access.
As the days go by, it will seem like less of a chore. Soon enough, it will become more of a habit to clean up your camera roll.

Highlight your favourites moments
If the thought of accidentally deleting a special moment fills you with dread, a good tip is to scan through your favourite memories and add them to your ‘favourites’ album. This doesn’t need a huge amount of time – just start by selecting a handful of photos that mean the most to you and go from there.
If you’re using an Android device, tap the star button, and if you’re using an iPhone, you can tap the heart. If you’re short on time, it’s a super fast, quick and easy way to bookmark the images that matter most to you.

Create smaller albums
Along with creating an album filled with a selection of your favourite photos, to simplify your camera roll even further, start by creating albums organised by either months, people or events.
The way you break down your photos into smaller albums will be different from everyone else, so it pays to organise your family photos in a way that makes sense to you.
Create an album for photos ‘to be edited’
If you find yourself scanning through photos as you’re making albums and sorting through your memories, we suggested creating a ‘to be edited’ album. If you can make time to do a quick crop, adjustment or add a filter on your photos, it helps to separate the good from the bad. You might even find some hidden gems buried in your camera roll.
Put those special moments somewhere special
The best place for your most special moments? Momatu, of course (and if you haven’t downloaded it yet – hit this link here to get started). With all your favourite photos and videos in your very own private photo album, you can look back at your favourite photos again and again.
Just don’t forget to share your pics with with loved ones. All you need to do, is invite them into your private album so they can share the excitement with you.
Create a photo book
Digital everything is great. But we can’t deny that holding onto a physical version of your favourite family photos is pretty special. If you jump into the Momatu app, check out the Print Shop where you can transform your moments into prints, photo books, mugs or customised items.
